Rescue dog refuses to leave with new owner because she’d miss her best friend

Dogs usually leave rescue centres with a smile on their face – but this poor pooch was crying her eyes out.

Pitbull Merrill and chihuahua Taco were surrendered to Rocket Dog Rescue, in San Francisco, America, through no fault of their own.

They were put up for adoption separately in hope this would increase their chances of being rehomed.

But when it came time for three-year-old Merrill to leave without her best friend, she refused to move and instead sat and cried in her cage.

Not wanting to separate the dogs, the man interested in adopting her turned his attention to another dog in need, as he didn’t have space in his home for two.

After realising they were a bonded pair, the team closed their separate applications and opened a new one where they could be rehomed together.

A spokesperson said: “These two love each other more than any bonded pair the shelter has ever seen. They cry when they leave each other’s side.

“This dynamic duo has lost their family, their home, and now we can’t let them lose each other.”

Thanks to a Facebook appeal, the pair soon secured a home together after passing their two-week trial with their new owner.

The spokesperson added: “They went on a two week trial adoption with the most wonderful family.

“They just let us know they would like to sign papers and make it official! They have found their forever home together.”

After spending a few weeks in their new home, their owner shared an update on how they have been settling in.

The update reads: “Merrill and Taco are doing wonderful in their forever home. They are enjoying hanging out by the fire and snuggling up after a long, fun-filled day.”

It comes after a rescue dog tried her very best to stand out in kennels by dancing for everyone who past her cage.

One-year-old Ginger Rogers managed to secure a new home thanks to her impressive dance moves.

The team at Orange County Animal Services, in Florida, said: “Ginger Rogers danced her way into hearts when her video was shared on social media. It’s been viewed more than 100,000 times.

“Miss Ginger has been adopted and she will soon be raising the roof under her new roof!”
